League Champions Are Crowned

ARLINGTON,
TX -- The Maverick Athletic Club hosted another Tuesday
and Thursday night Doubles Racquetball League and crowned
eight new champions in a round robin playoff. The finals
were set to play Tuesday night in the Mens Open with
Fred Foster,II & Richard Kourajian,
Howard Walker & Pat Gibson,
DJ Bittner & Paul DeLand
and the father-son team of Carlos Cespedes
& Carlos Cespedes, Jr. The championship
was decided by a score of 11-10, 11-6 as DJ & Paul
defeated Howard & Pat to win it all and claim 1st
place in the Mens Open Doubles.
Then
it was on to the Mixed Open division, where each team
is mixed with a male and a female. The stage was set
as Mike Jennings & Sandy
Long, John Dill & Tina
Joslin, Howard Walker &
Jere Luttner and James Thompson
& Keely Franks were ready to mix
it up. The teams were evenly matched until it came down
to the wire, as the newly formed team of James and Keely
looked unstoppable. They didn't lose a match and beat
every team in the playoffs and came away with 1st place
in the Mixed Open Doubles.
The Thursday night playoffs for the Mens AA Doubles
consisted of Bob Sullins & Mike
Jennings, Dave Leck &
Andy Crapper, Fred Foster,
II & Fred Foster, III
and David Long & Doug Draudt,
all looking for their first Mens AA title. It was all
Leck and Crapper as they steamrolled their way to the
end by winning the Mens AA Doubles championship.
The night was capped with the Womens Doubles as Rita
May & Traci Weaver, Sandy
Long & Robin Barnhart,
Mary Gumfory & Jeanette
Foster, and Ann Draudt &
Cheryl Bird took the court for the
ladies playoff. Sandy and Robin sent everyone packing
as they took 1st place in the Womens Doubles and ended
the night with a spectacular performance.
Congratulations
goes out to all the winners who received "Mav Bucks"
for 1st place and 2nd place winners walked away with
a Maverick Club T-shirt.

Doubles League Now Forming
Doubles Racquetball Leagues
will be starting soon. Leagues are set to begin on Tuesday
September 19th, and Thursday September 21st. Leagues
here at the Maverick have been very competitive, players
come from all over the Metrolpex to play. For those
of you who have not played in the doubles leagues before
this is a great opportunity to improve and elevate your
game. The doubles league will end Tuesday--November
7th, and Thursday--November 9th. There will be divisions
offered on both nights so that players who can't play
on Tuesday can play on Thursday. Seperate nights allow
more flexibility for you to play.
Deadline to enter is: Friday, Sept. 15th. Click

November
3-4 --Texas State Seniors Racquetball Tournament
November 11 --Maverick First Saturday Shootout
The
Maverick First Saturday Shootout will be moved to Saturday--November
11, 2006 due to the Texas State Seniors Racquetball
Tournament. This
a TXRA/USRA sanctioned racquetball tournament, all divisions
will be round robin using the mini-match format. All participants
must be at least 35 years of age before the first day
of competition. Everyone is invited to play, there is
no qualification requirements to play. Don't wait, the
deadline to enter is Monday, October 30th.
The Maverick First
Saturday Shootout consists
of one OPEN division of doubles play. All mens players
put in $20.00 and the pool is dispersed among the winners
of the round robin shoot-out. Partners are drawn out of
a hat. The shoot-out for the men begins promptly at 12:00
pm. The women start at 9:30am and the fee is only $10
per player for the ladies. This is also a very fun workout
and the level of play is high, which is better for everyone's
game.
