Singles League Ends With New Champions

ARLINGTON, TX -- The Maverick Athletic Club Summer Singles League came to an end this past week with finals in Mens Open, Mens A, Mens B, Mens C and Womens divisions. Over 85 players entered the singles league that was played on Tuesday and Thursday nights for 10 weeks. The finals in the Mens Open had Peter Michaely, Steve Yap, Pat Gibson, Howard Walker, Jason Adams and D.J. Bittner all playing in a single elimination bracket. Pat fought his way to the finals against DJ, but it wasn't enough as DJ walked away the Mens Open winner. The Mens A division had Allan Crawford, Allan Menchaca, George Moore, Sam Smith, Traci Weaver, and Mark Skinner playing in a tough draw. The finals came down to Allan C. and Mark, but Allan was too much and Allan won his second league championship in a row. (Allan won the Mens B earlier in the year.) The night was young and the Mens B was next as Fred Foster Jr, Randy Stover, Antonio Ramos and Ricky Thompson would kickstart the night. In front of a packed house it was Antonio and Fred who would mix it for the finals with Antonio winning the Mens B and his first league championship. The Mens C closed the night as Monte Bateman, Dale Wasson, Mike Ramos, Chuck Dusenbury, Kevin Noe, and Antonio Ramos were ready to rumble. The finals had Monte and Chuck playing a tough match with Monte walking away as the Mens C champion.

With 2 days of rest it was on to the Thursday night league finals. The Mens A (thursday league) had Steve Yap, Bob Sullins, Ricky Thompson, Sam Smith, Glen McCabe and Randy Dameron going for the gold. The players were evenly matched until it came down to the wire, as Steve and Randy met in the finals. Steve looked unstoppable against Randy and Steve won the Mens A in typical Steve Yap fashion. The Mens B was next and had Monte Bateman, Kevin Noe, Antonio Ramos, Dale Wasson, Gabe Bateman, and Eric Gunderson. Eric took out Antonio in a thrilling finals as Eric emerged the Mens B champion.
The night was capped with the Womens A as Mary Gumfory, Joetta Payne, Maria Manzella, and Becky Collins took the court for the ladies playoff. Mary sent everyone packing as she took 1st place over Becky Collins and ended the night with a spectacular performance.
