2004
Texas State Seniors
Champions Crowned
Maverick
Press
ARLINGTON,
TX -- This years Texas State Seniors in Arlington, TX (October 16-17, 2004) at
the Maverick Athletic Club saw players from all over the state as well as a few
neighbors from Oklahoma. 137 entrants entered over 35 divisions and battled it
out to be recognized as a Texas State Seniors Champion.
This event also marked
the return of Leo R. Vasquez, the new Athletic Director who promises to
make some exciting things happen this year. "I look forward to working with
all the players from the Dallas area to make the Maverick the #1 racquetball club
in the nation." Leo also went on to say, "The Maverick players seem
to be excited, so with their support, I can make anything happen here."
The
event was played over 2 days starting on Friday and kicking everything off with
a bang, was the Mixed Doubles. With 6 teams battling it out, it all came down
to (3) teams tied for 1st place, causing a tournament directors nightmare. The
teams of Tina Joslin/Jeff Norblade, Jere Luttner/Howard
Walker and Traci Weaver/Leo R Vasquez were deadlocked with only
1 match loss per team. The USRA
rule for round robin scoring took Weaver/Vasquez out since they lost a total
of 5 games in all matches. Joslin/Norblade and Luttner/Walker only lost 3 games
per team but Luttner/Walker had defeated Joslin/Norblade 5-4 in a tie-breaker,
therefore giving them the title of Mixed Doubles Champions.
The Mens 35+A singles
division saw Frank Westhoff run away with his division, with Todd King
coming in 2nd place and Chris Smith grabbing 3rd place. The Mens 45+ division
was also dominated by Pat Gibson with Mike Grisz finishing 2nd place
against players such as Joe Lucas, Dave Ragsdale and Ruben DeSimone.
The
Mens 55+ was also a battle with Jim Wildner taking the 1st place trophy,
and Billy Askins taking the runner-up position. Ottis Campbell rounded
out the division with a 3rd place finish.
Pulling
out the biggest upset was the showdown in the Mens 45+ Doubles. The heavy favorite
to win was the 'Dynamic Duo" of Howard Walker and Pat Gibson.
With 6 other teams gunning to take out Walker/Gibson, it was Mike Jennings
and Presley Darnell who stepped up their game and played some flawless
doubles to win and take 1st place. All the results and winners can be found on
the TXRA results page.
